MEDIA LANGUAG E SEMIOLOGY: THEORY BY ROLAND BARTHES SEMIOTICS  are s igns that can provide meaning. The literal meaning of a sign is known as the  DENOTATION.  Denotations signify CONNOTATIONS  , which are the thoughts and feelings associated with the denotation. MISE EN SCENE - French term translating to what is in the scene. Writing task - Media Language and Representation. Stereotypical messages surrounding gender pervade in the image, with the male character being shown as powerful and possessive over the female character. This portrayal supports the harmful stereotype that a man should hold the power in a relationship over a woman, who should remain fragile and let her partner protect her. This is seen through elements of mise en scene, one example  being the body language of the pair.
