MISE EN SCENE - French term translating to what is in the scene.
Writing task - Media Language and Representation.
Stereotypical messages surrounding gender pervade in the image, with the male character being shown as powerful and possessive over the female character. This portrayal supports the harmful stereotype that a man should hold the power in a relationship over a woman, who should remain fragile and let her partner protect her. This is seen through elements of mise en scene, one example being the body language of the pair. The female character has her eyes closed, head tilted downwards against the male, away from the camera, suggesting that the attention should be on the man, and she is nothing but an accessory to him. Contrary to the male, who has an upright posture and is looking directly at the camera. This portrayal creates a threatening atmosphere, and could come off as a warning to the audience, that people should stay away from his partner. This enforces the stereotype that men should always be powerful and masculine.
